My Central Phoenix Home Still Has a Fuse Box — Is That a Problem?

What you actually have

In the older neighborhoods — Coronado, Encanto, Willo, Garfield, parts of Arcadia and the Melrose district — we still find 60- and 100-amp fuse services, and occasionally sections of knob-and-tube left energized in an attic or a wall cavity after a partial remodel. Many of these homes have been rewired in pieces over sixty years, so the panel is only the part you can see.

The real risks we look for

• Over-fusing: a 30-amp fuse screwed into a circuit wired for 15 amps. The wire, not the fuse, becomes the weak point, and nothing will stop it from overheating.
• Knob-and-tube that has been buried in blown-in insulation. That wiring depends on open air to shed heat, and covering it removes that.
• Splices in the attic with no junction box, often left from a swamp cooler, an added bath, or a window AC circuit.
• Ungrounded two-prong outlets that someone replaced with three-prong receptacles, so surge strips and appliances report a ground that is not there.
• Cloth insulation that has gone brittle in a 140-degree attic and crumbles when moved.
• No GFCI protection at kitchens, baths, garages, laundry and exterior, and no AFCI anywhere.

Why insurance and buyers keep raising it

Fuse panels and knob-and-tube come up constantly in home inspections and in homeowner insurance underwriting. Whether a specific carrier will write or renew a policy is between you and your agent — we do not make that call — but if it has come up, what they generally want to see is a modern service, properly sized overcurrent protection, and documentation that the work was permitted and inspected.

Do you have to rewire the whole house?

Usually not all at once. In practice the work sorts into three buckets: the service and panel, the branch circuits that feed heavy or wet locations, and everything else. A service and panel replacement, with a proper grounding electrode system and bonding, fixes the part that protects everything downstream and is the normal first step. Kitchens, baths, laundry and any circuit feeding an AC unit come next. Bedroom and living-room circuits in sound condition can often stay until you open those walls for another reason.

Older homes also have a permitting reality worth knowing: a service change is permitted and inspected work, and it involves the City of Phoenix and APS or SRP on their own schedules. Confirm current requirements with your local building department, because they do change.

How we start

We open the panel, check what size fuses are protecting what size conductors, look at the service entrance and the grounding, and spot-check the attic and a few devices to see what era the branch wiring is from. Then you get a plain list of what is a safety issue now, what is a capacity limit, and what is simply old but fine. We would rather tell you three circuits need attention than sell you a rewire you do not need.
